Robert Jones, a 40 year old Canadian artist, started painting in 1985 after he developed an interest in architectural illustration. He was an illustrator for six years, in which time he had the opportunity to develop skills in watercolor, gouache and airbrush techniques. Robert has been hiking for over twenty years and has developed a great love for the outdoors. In 1993, Robert moved from the city of North Vancouver, B.C., to the small community of Brackendale, just north of Squamish, B.C. which enabled him to be closer to the mountains he enjoyed to paint and gave him the spiritual peace that he longed for. Since then, the scenery of the Squamish-Whistler area has been his focal point and inspiration.? In the fall of 2000, Robert moved to Calgary, Alberta, so that he could begin to chronicle a new area, the beautiful and breath taking, Canadian Rocky Mountains. His is a time consuming task, photographing and conceiving the image, then breaking the scene down to its basics, interpreting the landscape into graphic shapes with deliberate approach to detail. Drawing first in pencil, then piece by piece masking and airbrushing in acrylic, building smooth, rich cascade of color into a wonderful landscape. Color in thin layers, and in the most intense and brilliant shades, saturate the work and give the impression that they are lit up from behind. |
