Pastels area a passion for me. My research accelerated when I won awards in juried competitions in the United States. I consider myself a professional pastel artist representing Canada in many Pastel Society competitions in the United States. I accepted the visible world as a subject worthy of being painted. For me, color and light are inseparable. I visualize a completed painting many months before my pastel touches paper. I place a lot of emphasis on the quality of my materials and believe professional-grade products contribute significantly to a painting's success. The sensation of creating pastel landscapes outside, as the impressionists did, makes my colors vibrate with accuracy. As I've grown as an artist, I've realized the importance of recognizing and developing my unique way of working. The sensation of seeing all the beautiful colors with my eyes is controlled with conviction and speed by the pressure of my hand. In 2002 I was commissioned to paint Cards from the Heart "Canuck Place Children's Hospice" because my work is happy, vibrant and alive. I am in the process of doing a series of pastels for selected jury competitions in 2003 and 2004, amongst them: the Pastel Society of America in New York, Degas Society of Louisiana and the International Association of Pastel Societies in Washington. |
